Greater amberjack patrol the wall edge at Punta Sur in groups of 5 to 15 individuals, using the current as cover to approach smaller reef fish. At Los Testigos they show little fear of divers and will approach closely out of curiosity before resuming their patrol — behavior characteristic of populations with no experience of spearfishing. Their presence confirms the functioning pelagic-reef link that characterizes remote, fully protected reef systems.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
